About Matt
I am a lifelong resident of Lisbon and Griswold, and I am running for District 45 State Representative.
I work in our community as a Realtor, a paraprofessional, a basketball coach and currently serve as Third Selectman in Griswold.
I have a wonderful wife, two incredible sons and a Golden Retriever named Phoebe Buffay.
My large, loud and loving family, as well as my many years spent working as a bartender, have allowed me to connect and empathize with people from all walks of life.
My goal is to achieve positive, sustainable change to support our communities and to meet the needs of our neighbors. I believe in challenging the status quo, common sense policy, transparency in government and most importantly, that we have a responsibility to try to leave the world better than we found it.
Key Issues
The current affordability crisis is impacting every aspect of people’s lives and is putting a strain on resources across our district. We need to meet this crisis head-on and pass legislation that reduces the burden on our working class and fixed-income taxpayers in a way that is sustainable, not just a quick-fix.
Affordability for Our Residents
The challenges of modern public education are many and they are growing. Our students’ needs and their support systems have changed drastically but we are still trying use the same formulas, strategies and systems to teach them and to fund our schools. We can do more to meet students where they are by fully funding healthy meals, prioritizing school safety, increasing mental health services and finding more effective ways to connect with a broad array of learning styles.
Support and Change in Education
Municipalities and school districts cannot keep making improvements or provide support when they are struggling just to keep up with rising costs. The State has passed legislation requiring towns to increase their percentage of affordable housing but is not delivering resources to make that feasible. Additionally, we must hold our State and Federal Governments accountable for the funding that should be going back into our communities, and which far too often is not.
Resources for Municipalities
This administration has made a mockery of our Democracy and the fallout of that volatility is directly impacting our residents in the way of rising costs, reduced funding for essential programs and the spread of fear and division in our communities. We cannot rely on this federal government to do its job, therefore we must achieve our goals on our own, as a State. When it comes to protecting our residents and advocating for a world we want our children to grow up in, I believe that to be silent is to be complicit and I will not be complicit.
The Federal Government
We must increase our support for the working class and the labor unions fighting for workers’ rights. Safety, fair wages, comprehensive healthcare, adequate retirement benefits, and paid family/medical leave (among other things) should not be a luxury, they should be the standard. If you show up to work and do your job every day, you should be able to afford to feed your family, seek medical care without fearing the cost and retire with dignity. We must also protect our industries from the rising prevalence of artificial intelligence and automation. It is not enough to simply study the impact of AI, we need guardrails to protect workers and regulations to protect communities now, not later.
